Komt helemaal goed. Ons avontuur is begonnen.
Aankomst video hier: OmaFarAway
For the very best of reasons our alarm went at 5 am. I am one of those lucky people who open their eyes and are awake. I don't take an hour, or coffee or gentle persuasion. Up and at 'em! That's me.
Dressed, glass of water, make up and off we went. The traffic was starting to build to the normal working day level. We were extremely fortunate to miss the density that builds not 30 minutes later. The occasional slow short spurt here and there but for the rest, no issues. We were well in time. Just as we got to the arrival area ( 4 Gates to choose from) the noticeboard announced their landing and Gate number.
That was the nervous part. It is quite a tipple from the plane to customs and the bagage belt. And there are 24 odd bagage belts to choose from. Anyway, after a tense waiting period with tekst messages to and fro- the doors opened and my grandson appeared. Oh joy of joys. Well, that even sounds too mild. JOY of JOYS!
A short drive to a road side restaurant, coffee and a snack off we drove home. There a shower, cake and a sandwich before I tucked Max into bed. How fabulous a feeling was that. I'll wake him soon. Try to get a day/night rhythm established by the weekend. We will be fine.
Our adventure together has begun!

Opgelucht - in de lucht, Up up and away!
Scroll down for the English version.
"Oma airplane food isn't very nice."
Even stil zitten.
For almost everything and anything there is an App or gadget to help or inform about 'stuff'. And for tracking flights too. I have that App. Makes following loved ones handy. Flight arrivals, progress etc. Very handy.
The time has come. Son and daughter in law bring my grandson to the Airport in Melbourne. They check him in and the adventure can start. As I have all the flight information - I open the app and enter the data. Yes, the flight left on time. Not long after that I get a message. Well I never, it is my grandson." Oma we have WiFi on board." We chat a little, then he tells me he is practicing Dutch. On his iPad he has a wee book. It teaches handy frases and sayings. Quite funny, he has had a few months for this- but now is the perfect time.We practice together. It is a great way to pass those flight hours.
The arrival into Hong Kong and finding his way to the Gate went well. "Was very confusing" he said, "but I found it". He then had time to walk a bit stretching his legs. The stopover was short- after 2 and 1/2 hours they were taxing on the tarmac ready for take off.
I just checked his progress. All well. Can't wait till breakfast...... together.

Nog 3 dagen te gaan- not long now!

Scroll down for the English version
Wij wonen in Dordrecht.
Well, the date is fast approaching when I'll be off to Schiphol Airport to welcome my grandson here after his long journey from Down Under Melbourne on his first European adventure. His flight leaves Tuesday 3 April and has a stopover in HongKong. I'm so excited and getting butterflies just thinking about it. Heavenly. My dream becoming reality. And what an adventure. It isn't just a bus ride to the city- it is a 'big people' journey. Long, tiring, exciting, interesting, fun, and full of discoveries. I know he'll be fine and possibly a bit tired when he arrives but he'll soon adapt to the time change. Sadly though the temperatures are still not up to our usual springtime levels- but that too will improve. We will stay close to home the first week. There is so much to see and experience even from here. We live in Dordrecht so very central to most things. We live within coo-ey of Kinderdijk, the waterbus to Rotterdam is fun. Gorinchem a place to see and plenty of sights close to home. I have this sneaky suspicion we will need more time to see and do all I would like to see and do. But that's life.
It is my intention to make a full and informative coverage of his time here. As OmaFarAway, I Blog/Vlog and will make an album. Yes, that's heaps. And those options are all available so let's use them to our advantage. The 'at home stayers' can follow our adventures from their armchair. Maybe in the future the other family members are able to follow in my grandson's footsteps. All in good time. It keeps the dream alive.Well, the bedding is aired, the windows shiny ( as I won't be doing lots of that sort of thing the coming weeks) and the Nutella in the cupboard. Roll on 4th April. I'm all ready for you!!

Ik ga naar oma en ik neem mee.....: What to pack?
Scroll down for the English version
In z'n up.
Stroopwafel lusten? Patatje oorlog eten? Lopend, fiets of bus- of alle 3?
We are almost into single digits. There are not many left from the 365 days we started out with - now only 12 to go. All that planning, looking forward is almost at an end. Time to enjoy, fulfill and grab with both hands is almost upon us. I wake early, am slightly restless. As the morning descends here and the light falls in through the window, I can't drift back to sleep. My brain is racing like a formula 1 car. Fast and furious. The sign posts flash by. I imagine his farewell. Parents caring, nervous yet proud. They've had to farewell one son- and let him go forever. Now the youngest is temporarily leaving the nest. Flying literally and making his way out into the great big world out there. Hugs, tears, nerves. I know he will be fine. He can do this. I am glad the house won't be silent while he is away. His older brother and his two cherubs will be the reasons there is still noise and laughter echoing in the rooms. And after 8 weeks I will send him home- release him back to his parents and loved ones. Full of adventures, stories and memories.
I'm so excited about the impending arrival. I imagine how his trip may go. About his discoveries, about the change over at the airport. He knows that it will be big and busy. He knows to ask for directions - and he will. Has he a quiet, chatty or interested passenger next to him? Does he strike a friendship, find a fellow 'dutch' traveller to journey with? Will he like the food" Watch movies, listen to music, sleep? Is he comfortable?
Yes, it will all be fine on the night/day. Generally speaking. All will be well. He will be fine, ask his way round, get the necessary info and journey on safely. He will arrive at Schiphol and I will be there with bells on. Well, not really. But with arms to hold and welcome him here.
" Oma, tell me, what will I need? What should I bring in the way of clothes? Can we shop there for stuff? Would you make a list maybe?" Of course I will make a list. And YES, we will go shopping together.
I have a 'to - do' list. Naturally. Some things are a 'must-do' list. Pre-booked and plannend. The rest we will wing it. What fits fits. Will he enjoy the walks, bike rides and places I've earmarked? Will he miss his 'home cooking' or will a world of taste open up for him and discover more likes that he thought ever possible? Will the winter finally leave before he arrives. Will spring crank up the temperatures somewhat? Will he sleep ok on the sleeper couch? I did, loved it in fact. But a young strapping lad needs his sleep.
I need to let go. I need to relax and know- all will be well. We will have the time of our lives. We will be blessed and enriched by it, learn from it and make memories that will last a lifetime. Roll on 4th April.
Oh yes, I will be posting some of our adventures on my YouTube OmaFarAway channel. Yes I will!
