Ik ga naar oma en ik neem mee.....: What to pack?

Scroll down for the English version

In z'n up.

Stroopwafel lusten? Patatje oorlog eten? Lopend, fiets of bus- of alle 3?

We are almost into single digits. There are not many left from the 365 days we started out with - now only 12 to go. All that planning, looking forward is almost at an end. Time to enjoy, fulfill and grab with both hands is almost upon us. I wake early, am slightly restless. As the  morning descends here and the light falls in through the window, I can't drift back to sleep. My brain is racing like a formula 1 car. Fast and furious. The sign posts flash by. I imagine his farewell. Parents caring, nervous yet proud. They've had to farewell one son- and let him go forever. Now the youngest is temporarily leaving the nest. Flying literally and making his way out into the great big world out there. Hugs, tears, nerves. I know he will be fine. He can do this. I am glad the house won't be silent while he is away. His older brother and his two cherubs will be the reasons there is still noise and laughter echoing in the rooms. And after 8 weeks I will send him home- release him back to his parents and loved ones. Full of adventures, stories and memories.

I'm so excited about the impending arrival. I imagine how his trip may go. About his discoveries, about the change over at the airport. He knows that it will be big and busy. He knows to ask for directions - and he will. Has he a quiet, chatty or interested passenger next to him? Does he strike a friendship, find a fellow 'dutch' traveller to journey with? Will he like the food" Watch movies, listen to music, sleep? Is he comfortable?

Yes, it will all be fine on the night/day. Generally speaking. All will be well. He will be fine, ask his way round, get the necessary info and journey on safely. He will arrive at Schiphol and I will be there with bells on. Well, not really. But with arms to hold and welcome him here.

" Oma, tell me, what will I need? What should I bring in the way of clothes? Can we shop there for stuff? Would you make a list maybe?" Of course I will make a list. And YES, we will go shopping together.

I have a 'to - do' list. Naturally. Some things are a 'must-do' list. Pre-booked and plannend. The rest we will wing it. What fits fits. Will he enjoy the walks, bike rides and places I've earmarked? Will he miss his 'home cooking' or will a world of taste open up for him and discover more likes that he thought ever possible? Will the winter finally leave before he arrives. Will spring crank up the temperatures somewhat? Will he sleep ok on the sleeper couch? I did, loved it in fact. But a young strapping lad needs his sleep.

I need to let go. I need to relax and know- all will be well. We will have the time of our lives. We will be blessed and enriched by it, learn from it and make memories that will last a lifetime. Roll on 4th April.

Oh yes, I will be posting some of our adventures on my YouTube OmaFarAway channel. Yes I will!

Aftellen - the countdown continues!

Elke keer weer.

Kids, oma komt eraan hoor! Ik ben er helemaal klaar voor.

It is January 2017. I can finally start the countdown in weeks instead of months. Another 12 weeks and I will be winging my way Down Under to hug and hold those dear to me. I can't wait and the excitement is building. Anyone would think this is a trip of a lifetime- that I haven't been to see my children and  grandchildren before. Nothing is further from the truth. I have had a number of trips to visit them since my return to Nederland in 2000. The excitement is as precious and present as in the previous preparation times before my intended flights. I am reminded of another precious moment which illustrates this even more.

A few years ago I attended a book presentation in Nederland whilst knowing my daughter in law had started labour in Aotearoa. For obvious reasons I was not able to be there for them- but to be able to be in touch was as precious to me so I made sure I wouldn't miss the phone call once the baby was born. I placed the phone in my bra and had the settings on tremble. There was no way I was going to miss this precious call. As 'fate' would have it, right at the moment of presentation of the book, the phone went.

I hurried out the room into the reception area and took the call. Teary and emotional I spoke with my son and partner- a wee daughter had been born to them. All was well. After some more information and the call being ended I felt a tap on my shoulder. One of the woman who was responsible for the reception asked me if anything was wrong. I assured her my tear streaked cheeks were happy ones and explained what had happened. A wine glass was pressed into my hands and all of a sudden I was toasting my granddaughter's arrival with total strangers. One of the women asked, " is this your first grandchild?" to which I replied, " no, my 8th. But no matter how many, the joy, emotions and experience stays special." She told me then, that her daughter was pregnant with her first (grand) child and she was happy to know that each subsequent birth could bring as much joy as the first.

And that's my experience with my impending journey. The previous ones brought as much joy, anticipation and nervousness as this one does.

Onward and upward- the countdown continues. Omaverweg- is getting ready to go!
