Keeping in touch from a distance

Do you have family living overseas? Or are you fortunate to have them in the same country, in the same town even?

Mid 1961 my parents took the plunge and we emigrated from the Netherlands to New Zealand. Due to health issues with my baby brother we returned to the Netherlands early 1967.

Unsettled, family in fits and starts back to New Zealand by mid 1971.

Seesaw immigrants you could say.

In 2000 I returned to the Netherlands on my own. My 28 year marriage had stranded, my children were of adult age and forging their own paths. One son had moved over to Australia in 1997 where he created his own family.

So you could say, we are scattered hither and yon. Each living their lives in the manner personally designed. This is my 21st year back in the Netherlands. It has brought me happiness and pain. Being this far removed from the children en growing grandchildren hasn't been all plain sailing but it hasn't all been terrible either. My main goal was- visit every 18 months, more if possible, less if the needs ( financial) must.

This past year has been a true trial. I haven't been able to even plan a trip let alone make one. I've got the presents. Purchasing the odd thing along the way. They sat and stared at me, pleading to be given and used. I have had to put them in the cupboard. Can't bear to look at them. I want to hand them over myself. See their faces when they open their gift. There is an option to post/ship a box full for everyone. I may have to resort to that.

To fill some of the void, I have written a couple of short stories and had the books printed via a photo album site. I may tape myself reading them and send the file. Had other ideas. Bedtime moment ideas. Those will have to wait.

I have been making videos ( I am an amateur) on YouTube, showing off the places I go to. Teaching them more about this country of their fore-fathers and mothers. Sharing my life in a small way. Another way to reach out instead of being able to tell the tales and describe the events. It fills the time, as I am then totally focussed on them. It feels like I'm visiting. It is one way of creating 'visits'. I especially love the cooking videos, thinking that maybe one day, they may use these recipes themselves.

The videos aren't as personal as you would think. That's because I know other family and friends watch them. I also created a cook book for some of the younger grandchildren with some recipes I use regularly. I have another one on the way for the older grandchildren. A bit more elaborate. Oh how I would love to provide them personally with meals and cakes. This is the next best thing. I love it when I'm told they have used the cookbook or have watched a video.

It's not like we are online every day, all the time. Lives are being lived. School, events, friends, work, time out, time in. Not to mention the juggling the clock and time difference. I think we have a healthy relationship in which we allow each other to share what they choose. It is normal for them and me, to continue to live our life to suit our situation. By doing some of the wee extra things I hope to maintain a bond which in turn brings our lives a little closer.

There is nothing more special that spending time together, even when you are apart. There are so many ways in which one can do that these days. Sadly my grandparents in 1961 didn't have any of the options we have today. I am hopeful for the future. For my next possible visit. I do my best to stay healthy and fit and am grateful for the fact that my family Down Under is safe and well. That is the most precious thing of all.

" Hi mum, happy birthday. We've got a surprise for you. We are having another baby." Isn't that the most wonderful gift EVER!!? Indeed it is. From a family of 5 they are increasing their number to 6. Baby is due mid-end November. My first thought was...' wow what a year. My Australian grandson here for 2 months, my girlfriend from New Zealand coming for a visit AND becoming oma again! I might have to plan a trip. Well, I was already trying to find a suitable date for all concerned before this news, this just made it more pressing.

I've always been OmaFarAway. Even while living in New Zealand I didn't get to see my 3 grandchildren in Australia a lot. And that was 'just across the ditch". The news both excited me and caught me by surprise. I thought the 3 families were 'complete'. So, all you omas out there, be prepared to be surprised.

Apart from being able to be in New Zealand at the time of my daughter's second child, I haven't had the privilege of being there for any of the others. My sober and  levelheadedness says, ' that's how it is!" No matter how hard I find it in reality. It is what it is...!

Yes, we keep in touch, I follow the children's developments using the means available today. Modern technology provides so many visual opportunities. Even still, their developments, changes to their looks, build and even outlook on life take place without me watching that happening step by step. Between my visits and re-unions, so much has already taken place.

OmaFarAway
One of the granddaughters has developed a love for the horse sport since the tender age of 4. She's doing so well now with her own horse Bess. Gathering ribbon after ribbon at events and competitions. My Australian border  (18 years of age) ,  now has a fully grown up job altering his path and that of his parents. A new time frame developing there. The others, all also rapidly assuming their identities in their chosen activities. That's probably the most beautiful part of seeing them develop. I do miss being a more active part in that. Suffice to say, they are doing well despite my absence.

My planning for a visit is on hold unfortunately. The rehabilitation after surgery on my hand are  taking on drama proportions. Can't hold the baby, bake the apple taart or do up my own bra. Bummer. I'll now take a shot somewhere early  in 2019. Time will tell. Meanwhile they can follow some of my antics. The OmaFarAway videos help them get an insight into what I get up to so that's one way I can share my life with them... and all those family and friends who live 'FarAway'! I am proud to be their Oma, despite being FarAway and carry that title with honour.

Roll on 2019 and let it bring more of the joys of 2018.

Een toevoeging - Added something new

Scroll down for the English version.!!

Komt allemaal goed.

Well,   the times they are a changing. That's the song I recall from Bob Dylan (1964). And changed they have. In 1961 when my parents decided to immigrate to New Zealand we kept in touch with the 'home front' writing aerogrammes, sending parcels by boat and if needs must een telegram ( generally bad news) was sent. Phone calls were a real challenge.

Then things changed.

With the development of Internet, the options of social media keeping in touch has never been so simple. Whether on the bike, in the bath or at work, people can contact you where ever you are. Not only that. There are many ways news and special events are being kept, spread and shared.

In my 60th year ( I turned 59 and had an idea) I started Blogging. That is, keeping a diary online. A Book-log. Had aspirations to place something each day for a year. Well that was a too big an ask, but I've kept blogging ever since. After a while I have the blogs printed in book for for personal use, reading and as a keepsake. My family and friends near and far enjoy reading what I get up to, my thoughts and my passions ( cooking). I write about a few topics and it also helps clear my head.

The saying, " can't teach an old dog new tricks" doesn't cut the mustard with me. I've learnt about blogging- and now, I've challenged myself again. I have started to Vlog. A Video log. That means I make short oma videos and place them online on YouTube. A 'live' version of blogging. This so I can 'talk' to my children grandchildren other family and friends about the day to day happenings in my life. NO, not about everything I do- but about the wee things I like to share. That way, the grandchildren will know my voice, will get to know me better and, like most things online, is accessible to them at any given time. Being awake while they sleep can be a barrier for contact. It is a challenge. It is also quite scary and unnerving. But also exciting, interesting, funny and confronting.
The learning new tricks Oma

Anyway, I am game to grow, to learn, to move with the changing times and try to be informed and aware of the world my grandchildren Down Under are growing up in. Feel free to take a look at the videos already posted. Feel even more free to subscribe- no I don't get paid or earn anything. Just thought, maybe a safe opening for omas ( and opas) to see how this 'oma' manages to learn and improve her skills as a modern oma.

The link is onder the pictogram. The YouTube canal is called, OmaFarAway. Enjoy and see you there.
